A message from Dr. Cascone

On behalf of the Board of Education and our school district staff, I would like to thank you for your efforts, patience, and attention in helping to ensure that our school year got off to the best possible start. We appreciate your patience as we refine our operating procedures and work through the inevitable challenges that accompany the opening of a new school year.

I often say that, as complicated as the day-to-day operations of a school district can be, we do not have the luxury of scrimmages or dress rehearsals. We flip the switch and go. All things considered, I would say we are off to a good start, and we will continue to improve in the days ahead.

Remembering September 11

I would be remiss if I did not offer some thoughts and reflections as we approach the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

While none of our current students were alive at the time, that day and its terrible consequences certainly had an impact on all of us, and, in some cases, a profound impact on members of our own community. It is a day we will always remember, and we will never forget.

You will notice tomorrow that our great American flag will be flown at half-staff in memory of the civilians and first responders who were senselessly taken from us. We remember them and the selfless sacrifices made that day.

Across the district:

• All of our schools will observe a moment of silence during morning announcements, followed by a brief, age-appropriate announcement for students.

• Our Supervisor of Social Studies has equipped our social studies teachers with simple “Do Now” exercises that can be used to facilitate meaningful conversation and instruction around this infamous day in our history.

• Our faculty will create safe, respectful, and objective spaces for discussion should teachable moments arise throughout the day.

Early Dismissal and Rosh Hashanah

A reminder that tomorrow, Friday, September 11, the district will dismiss early for a 90-minute professional development day and in advance of the Rosh Hashanah holiday, which begins at sundown tomorrow.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members of our community who will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah a joyous and safe holiday surrounded by family, friends, and loved ones.
